That said, I love your kind of trip too. I was feeling a-get-up-and-go type trip for this one. We took different kinds of trips. We would only change campsites 3 times in a week. Now 37 years later they have canoed Quetico, woodland caribou, Wabikimi. They are all at home in the wilderness and guide some trips for friends now. But I have found out that not many parents have the confidence to take tots into the wilderness. Young kids are actually easier to take than teenagers. They are fascinated by everything and don't complain about missing social media. I have not missed a wilderness canoe trip since 1969. Yup I,m an old timer but still spent 3 weeks canoeing last year. My girls are guide qualified and very confidant. When projected life expectancy gets down to within maybe a half-dozen years, as does the age when your father passed away, dreams and desires begin to taste bitter, balance is less certain, and joints and endurance don't last as long as the portage. Perhaps worst of all is when you look at a new piece of paddling or camping gear, and sadness floods in, making you hesitate buying it because you fear you won't live long enough to enjoy it, let alone wear it out. Prioritize life. Living it surpasses meeting deadlines, getting a raise or promotion, or reaching retirement. Life is a game played against the clock. The objective is to live it before the final buzzer.
